Geoffrey Chaucer: the Cantebury Tales Hypocrisy inside the Church of England During the,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Essay

Geoffrey Chaucer was a language poet throughout the Medieval Period. While this individual does not appear to

have been a social reformer, he received attention to the hypocrisy with the Catholic Cathedral in his

works, The Canterbury Tales.

College students agree that little is well know about Chaucer. We do not have much personal inform-

mation, such as " the souvenirs, letters, schedules, personal reminiscences, that cluster thickly

about such later figures since Byron, Shelley or Yeats” (Morrison 7). Most of what is known has

been gathered from official or public papers. According to West, " we don't even understand if

he was Anglo-Saxon or Norman France as Chaucer (from chaussier, a shoemaker) indicates”

(42). While not shoemakers, Chaucer's " father and grandfather had been both wine beverages merchants,

evidently successful and rising men” (Morrison 7).

Geoffrey Chaucer was born at some time between 1340 -1345, working in london, England. It is far from known

what education level that Chaucer may reach. Since he became a member of the

household of Elizabeth, countess of Ulster, it is assumed that he had a chance to receive

degree. It is thought that Chaucer could go through French, Latin and German.

Society in Chaucer's time was divided into 3 " estates”. Singman and McLean show that

" The initial estate was your clergy, who had been responsible for people's spiritual health and wellness. The

second estate was your aristocracy, who had been supposed to guard the nation with the military

might. The third estate was the commons, whose function was to labor and produce the country's

wealth”(9).

When Chaucer was a young son, bubonic and pneumonic plague struck The european union. The trouble was

called the " Black Death”. " In 1348-49, the Black Fatality reduced area in 16

months by perhaps 4 million to 2 million five hundred thousand, and precipitated the

class struggle” (Singman & McLean 2). As a result, there were labor disadvantages, causing laborers

to demand more pay and peasants to fight to free themselves from what could be considered

" slave labor” on community estates. We see greed bountiful in the House of worship at this time.

There is almost everywhere such a dearth of priests that lots of churches happen to be left with no divine office buildings of mass, matins, vespers, sacraments and sacramentals. You possibly can scarcely obtain a chaplain to serve at a chapel for less than 10 marks. And whereas prior to the pestilence, when there were plenty of priests, anyoe could get a chaplain for five and even four marks, or for 2 marks fantastic board, at this time there was barely a heart and soul who would agree to a vicarage, laments a canon of Leicester (West 77)

At the same time when there is much poverty and struggling, the House of worship continued to generate expensive

Cathedrals. To the ordinary citizen, it seemed hypocritical for Both roman Catholic Cathedral to preach

against the trouble of greed when the churches were thus ornately constructed.

Chaucer performed public service, including diplomatic missions, for 3 nobleman during his lifetime.

They were Edward 3, Richard II and Henry IV. Chaucer kept royal commissions through

most of his life, so that it appears that his writings, which often made comment on human frailty

as well as the abuse of power, would not offend his royal business employers.

Fletcher inform us that " according to his good friend, pupil and fellow poet person, Thomas Hoccleve, Chaucer

was ‘the initially finder of our fair language' (32). " At a time when ever most important poems was

written in Anglo-Norman or Latin, his usage of English performed a central role in establishing the

literary dialect we recognize today (Fletcher 32). The Cantebury Stories was the 1st work by simply

a major poet to be crafted in Middle section English. In Chaucer's time, Middle English, was a

dialect considered to be pertaining to the poor, lowly or misleading. Another factor making

the availability of...
